Creating Unique Yard Art: My Journey from Craft Fair to Custom Birdhouses and Beyond

My first craft fair of the season was a refreshing experience. After a busy winter filled with creative projects, it felt great to reconnect with old friends and meet new ones. This season, I’m diving into some exciting woodworking projects, inspired by nature and the unique materials I’ve gathered. From carving a bird bath out of a massive log to crafting birdhouses from beautiful red cedar, my workshop is buzzing with ideas. I’m also exploring new designs for what I call my “wood danglers,” a form of yard art that adds charm and personality to outdoor spaces.
A Winter of Creative Exploration
The winter months were far from quiet. I spent a lot of time experimenting with different woodworking techniques and materials. One of the highlights was receiving two large logs from my vet, who had a huge tree removed because it was causing problems. These logs are perfect for my next big project: a bird bath. I plan to carve it out using my chainsaw and grinder, tools that allow me to shape wood with precision and creativity.
Alongside this, I’ve been fortunate to work with Ledge Hill Farms, my local wood supplier, who provided me with plenty of red cedar. This wood is ideal for birdhouses because it’s durable, naturally resistant to decay, and has a beautiful grain. Using this material, I’m crafting birdhouses that are not only functional but also visually appealing.
Crafting a Bird Bath from a Large Log
Carving a bird bath from a log is a challenging but rewarding project. The first step is selecting the right log—one that is solid and free of major cracks. Once I have the log, I use my chainsaw to roughly shape the basin, removing large chunks of wood. After that, I switch to my grinder for finer details and smoothing the surface.
This process requires patience and care, especially to ensure the basin holds water without leaking. I also think about the bird bath’s placement in the yard, aiming to create a welcoming spot for birds to drink and bathe. The natural look of the wood blends beautifully with garden surroundings, making it a functional piece of art.
Designing Birdhouses with Red Cedar
Red cedar is a favorite material for birdhouses because it withstands weather well and looks stunning. Thanks to Ledge Hill Farms, I have a good supply of this wood, which allows me to experiment with different birdhouse designs. Some are simple and rustic, while others have intricate details carved into the wood.
I focus on creating birdhouses that attract local bird species, considering factors like entrance hole size and ventilation. Each birdhouse is unique, reflecting the natural beauty of the cedar and my personal style. These pieces are popular at craft fairs, where customers appreciate the blend of craftsmanship and nature.

Exploring Unique Materials and New Ideas
This season, I was also asked to carve a very unique stone, which pushed me to expand my skills beyond wood. Working with stone requires different tools and techniques, but it’s exciting to add variety to my craft.
A good friend recently gave me a gorgeous piece of wood she found while hiking. I’ve already visualized it as an outstanding piece, perfect for a new birdhouse or yard art. Finding such natural treasures inspires me to keep exploring and creating.
Preparing for Summer Craft Fairs and a Trip to Maine
I’m gearing up for craft fairs in June, where I’ll showcase my birdhouses, bird bath, and wood danglers. These events are a great way to connect with people who appreciate handmade, nature-inspired art.
After the fairs, I plan to travel to Maine to search for more unique pieces of wood and other natural materials. This trip will help me find accents for my birdhouses and new ideas for my yard art. I’m particularly interested in experimenting with finch houses, which require specific designs to suit these small birds.
What Are Wood Danglers?
Wood danglers are a form of yard art I’ve been developing. They are decorative pieces made from wood, often carved or shaped into interesting forms, and designed to hang in gardens or outdoor spaces. These pieces add character and a touch of whimsy to yards, creating a connection between art and nature.
I enjoy experimenting with different shapes and finishes for the wood danglers, sometimes combining wood with other natural elements like stones or metal. Each piece is unique and reflects the natural beauty of the materials.
Looking Ahead
This season promises to be full of creativity and discovery. From carving a bird bath out of a large log to crafting unique birdhouses and yard art, I’m excited to share my work with others. The upcoming trip to Maine will open new doors for inspiration and materials.
Keep an eye out for my upcoming projects and craft fair dates. I look forward to sharing more of this journey with you.
